Paper Pricing Update

What's Happening with Paper Prices?

Office paper is a very volatile product when it comes to price and availability.

Over the last twenty years, the demand for printing paper declined significantly and many paper mills closed their doors. In the past 7 years alone, 27% of production capacity in North America has been shut down, consolidating into just a few operations.

In 2016, the U.S. Commerce Department announced tariffs of up to 200% on imported papers, further shrinking the supply of copy paper in the U.S. And in 2017, the cost of wood pulp, the same material used to make paper, spiked significantly, thanks to increased demand for packaging materials for e-commerce deliveries worldwide.

So the mills that survived the decline now have the power to increase prices – and they began doing just that in the summer of 2017. They continued to increases prices throughout 2018, and most recently, costs increased again in March of 2019.

At Perry Office Plus, we try to hold paper prices steady for our customers whenever possible. Some increases we absorb, while others, have to be passed on. We will keep you updated to any future changes as we become aware of them.
